- Shielding is the metallic isolation of one region of space from another, to control the induction and radiation of electric fields, magnetic fields and electromagnetic waves between them. In practice, a shield encloses the components, circuits, assemblies, cables or whole systems that act as interference sources, preventing the interference field from spreading outward; and it encloses receiving circuits, equipment or systems, preventing them from being affected by external fields. Because a shield absorbs energy (eddy-current loss), reflects energy (interface reflection off the shield) and cancels energy (electromagnetic induction generating a reverse field in the shielding layer that cancels part of the interference wave), it attenuates incoming interference. \n
